30 January 2013

coming soon...

I'm currently working on an e-chapbook of my best haiku of 2012.

Everything's sorted and it's in the final draft stage. As soon as I publish it, it'll be posted here, of course.

Stay tuned...

crikey moment

In nearly a year of not writing anything and effectively "retiring" from the haiku "scene", I've found out I've written about 20 haiku... Damn!

details soon (editing underway)...

Hello friends

Just a little note to say that I'm going to be lying low for a while. I haven't been feeling well recently and want to concentrate on trying to take it easy by shifting my priorities around a bit.

It's my old monster waking up and making a nuisance of itself again and I need to figure out the right way to go about retaming it.

I haven't been reading or writing that much recently anyway, and I just want to tune out for a while to refresh myself if I can.

I'll be back, but I didn't want people to think I'd disappeared altogether. With a bit of luck I should be back sooner than you think.

Nothing too serious - I'm tired and I just need to recharge...

Regards,
Dave

I have three fox related poems included in Aubrie Cox's latest excellent project "Fox Dreams" - a collection of poetry about foxes and/or dreams.

Fox Dreams is now available to download on Yay! Words! - Aubrie's website.

NaHaiWriMo #29 & #28

prompt: leap day / year

leap day -
on my way back
the busker still silent

and this concludes my NaHaiWriMo contributions for Feb 2012. Prompts continue all year but February is the main month. I may still pop in and out over the year.

The prompt for #28 was to rewrite a computer generated haiku into a passable haiku / senryu. I've had a go, but it isn't great ...

generated "haiku":

rumbling echo gnaws
icicle quarrels hotly
hotly lame

my rewrite:

woken by hunger
I trip down the stairs -
an ice pack from the fridge
to my knee

NaHaiWriMo #27

prompt: an intentionally bad haiku

with a bad haiku
my NaHaiWriMo ends now?
"Bye ev'rybody!"

I was told off for calling my zip haiku bad so I thought I'd give it another go.

26 February 2012

NaHaiWriMo #26 & #27

prompt: zip
prompt: an intentionally bad haiku

zip-a-dee-doo-dah
fraying my nerves
your wonderful day

25 February 2012

NaHaiWriMo #25

prompt: yellow

talk of redundancies
even the spring bulbs
in corporate colours

24 February 2012

NaHaiWriMo #24

prompt: any word beginning with or containing the letter x

not talking to me
but at the end of her message
x

NaHaiWriMo #23

prompt: wig

recession -
in the party shop window
the colours of fright wigs

Some of the small towns near where I live have been hit hard by the recession and there are fairly high levels of unemployment, with shops being boarded up etc.

I was tempted to go for the black humour and have 'ghost town' as the first line, so that the words ghost and fright would be in the same haiku (also it would have given a political nod to the Specials song of the same name - written in similar economic times).

However, the town in question isn't a ghost town so it wouldn't have been right and it would have been too halloween rather than social comment. It's just a town making the best of hard times. Maybe we can be optimistic that one of the small businesses still open is the party shop?

NaHaiWriMo #22

prompt: vent

regeneration site
the old tunnel's air vents
all in a line

21 February 2012

NaHaiWriMo #21

prompt: umbrella

a sudden shower -
my daughter tries each brolly
in the shop

NaHaiWriMo #20

prompt: talus (scree)

in mudstone and shale
the ancient delta
spills from the rock face

In spite of the fact (or because?) I'm a geology graduate, I tend to shy away from writing about rocks. There's no good reason for this, I guess, except that it was part of my life 20ish years ago. Maybe I should dig out ('scuse the pun) my old notebooks to see if they spark any resonant memories.

I have written about scree before, though.
